South Korean Folk Group Performs at Bliss

The Bliss Center for the Performing Arts is the venue for the Gwangdae’s Korean folk performance, “Spin Jump Fly.”  Just before news time tonight, the Korean Embassy in El Salvador which is accredited to Belize showcased Korean traditional dance, percussion instruments and the comedy of the circus.  “Spin Jump Fly” is being performed by ten Korean artists, known as the “Gwangdae,” who will be incorporating the farmer’s band music, a masked and lion dance and the plate spinning technique. Cultural Advisor Hwang Joong Jin says that the event is to commemorate the thirtieth year of diplomatic relationship between both countries.

“Tonight we have the pleasure of showcasing a cultural performance to mark the thirtieth anniversary of established diplomatic relations between Korea and Belize. We brought a traditional Korean cultural group to share with the Belizean public. It comprises a diversity of traditional Korean cultural presentations where we can see the traditional instruments of Korea; four percussion instruments and the lion dance, mask of a lion, and then also theatrical acts in Korean versions. The delegation consists of ten persons; nine of them are artists.”

The local population of Koreans living in Belize is approximately thirty persons; Cultural Advisor Jin says, however, that many Koreans visit Belize as tourists.
