Kareem Says P.M. Should Pay for B.T.L.

Kareem Musa

The settlement of the acquisition of Belize Telemedia Limited and related concerns twice over by the Government of Belize between 2009 and 2011 remains a burr in the saddle of the People’s United Party. The P.U.P. contends that the issue should have been settled long ago, and that the reason it was not was as an invitation for the connected in the United Democratic Party to pull profits one way or the other. At Saturday’s municipal convention, Kareem Musa, a critic of Prime Minister Dean Barrow’s handling of the deal, reminded audience members of the relationship between Barrow’s firm Barrow and Williams and Lord Michael Ashcroft and said that the P.M. should go beyond a mea culpa – the seventy-eight-million U.S. dollar compensation should come from his pockets.

“They still represent Michael Ashcroft to this day, so noh listen to him when he talks about devils and demons. This was his client; his favorite client, the client that brings him the most money for his law firm. So we have to realize what is taking place, my brothers and sisters – two hundred million dollars being paid out that we did not have to pay. And the Prime Minister is saying, it is my fault. Well if dah your fault then da you pay back for it! Why we should have to pay back for your mistake – that makes no sense at all. So we have to realize, my brothers and sisters, that this is a serious game this man is playing with the Belizean people. Serious games, we have to wake up.”
