S.S.B. ‘Pink-Eye’ Claims Hit Million-Dollar Threshold

Since an outbreak of pink eye almost two months ago, schools, as well as workplaces, have seen a considerable decrease in the population of students and employees.  While missing classes due to sickness comes at the detriment of the student, workers with infected pupils need to be compensated by the Social Security Board.  Today, S.S.B. says that it has disbursed in excess of one million dollars in sick benefits for persons affected by conjunctivitis.  According to a release, a total of seven thousand, eight hundred and fifty-two claims have been made between September fourth and October twenty-ninth, a majority of which were filed in Belize City.  Over the course of the past six weeks, S.S.B. has paid out a whopping nine hundred and seventy-one thousand, four hundred and thirty-one dollars to beneficiaries.  When compared to a similar rash of pink eye in 2016, it amounts to fourteen point four times more than what was expended that year.  A calculation of the number of sickness benefit days paid up to the end of October comes up to thirty-four thousand, six hundred and seventy-seven days.
