Mexico Pledges More Support for Hurricane-Hit Islands

Enrique Peña Nieto

President Enrique Peña Nieto aside from reaffirming Mexico’s commitment to assisting the hurricane-affected island nations of the Caribbean also spoke about the need for improving bilateral cooperation in other areas of common interest.

Enrique Peña Nieto, President of Mexico [Translated]

“Mexico has participated since 1974 as an observer to CARICOM; this organization that unites fifteen countries of the Caribbean and today it is the forth summit since 2010, has been organized as CARICOM-Mexico. The main purpose is to find mechanisms of cooperation and support between Mexico and the Caribbean countries in order to foster prosperity, well-being and development in the region. I would like to thank the Prime Minister of Belize for his hospitality and for the opportunity to have had a bilateral meeting that reaffirmed our ties of friendship and cooperation between Mexico and Belize. I have extended an invitation to him to visit us soon in Mexico City. In this CARICOM-Mexico Summit, as stated by the Prime Minister of Grenada, we have agreed that this region has been impacted by the forces of nature that have caused the loss of lives and many damages. Mexico has also suffered due to earthquakes in September.”

His visit to Belize began just before eleven this morning and the Mexican President departed following the press conference.
