Major Destinations Scoop Up National Tourism Awards

With consistently gaudy figures for arrivals and awards here, there and everywhere, Belize’s tourism industry has much to smile about.  This past Saturday at the Princess Hotel, the top service providers were honored at the fifteenth annual Belize Tourism Board’s national tourism awards.  The selected theme was “Rainforest Meets Reef.”  Tourism Minister Manuel Heredia Junior awarded fellow San Pedrano Phillip “Billy” Leslie the Minister’s Award, while John Michael “Mick” Fleming and Lucy Fleming of the Lodge at Chaa Creek were named Lifetime Achievement Award winners. Southern-based properties scooped several awards including Caribbean Beach Cabanas in Placencia for Small Accommodation of the Year; and Rumfish y Vino in Placencia for restaurant of the year. Further south there were awards for Estevan Choco of The Lodge at Big Falls as top tour guide and Toledo Cave and Adventure Tours was named top tour operator. Ian Anderson’s Caves Branch on the Hummingbird Highway took the Hospitality Award. From Ambergris Caye, Grand Caribe in north Ambergris was named hotel of the year and Las Terrazas Resort’s Leroy Welch was recognized as top frontline personnel.
