Robbed and Murdered: Ricardo Vasquez Attacked on His Way Home

Police say that eighty-two-year-old Ricardo Vasquez was murdered. On Friday we reported that Vasquez had succumbed after spending almost a week in the Intensive Care Unit of the K.H.M.H.  He was found beaten up on the corner of Water Lane and West Street on October fourteenth. Up to then, it was not clear what happened to Vasquez because there was no police report and the information that reached the family was conflicting.  But the post-mortem shows that the eighty-two-year-old man was killed – his family reports that he was stabbed several times to the face and head and robbed of his wallet. It was previously reported that Vasquez was inside a game shop and when he exited, he was robbed. But the family informed us that is not an accurate version of events. They say Vasquez was never at the game shop and the police informed them that the establishment was not open at the time of the deadly attack. According to his family, earlier that evening he was spending some time with friends and as he was heading to his house on Baghdad Street, he was attacked dumped in a drain on the corner of “Kent Market” – a game shop in the area.  Vasquez was a cobbler by trade and ran a small shoe mending operation out of his home. The octogenarian is well known across the city and in his neighborhood. He worked up until retirement age with the Belize Port Authority. His neighbours and tenants say he was very easy going, liked and respected by all.
