Ahead of Media Meeting on Tuesday, Inspector Offers Support

Fitzroy Yearwood

Amid his own professional differences with the Belize Police Department, the media has found an ally in Inspector Yearwood who stands firmly in our corner when it comes to the ongoing boycott.  Yearwood, as a member of the Media Relations Unit for several months, was instrumental in sharing information with the press.  While his transfer was sudden, he says that he also played a key role in repairing the fractured relationship earlier in the year by hammering out a revised media policy for the department.

Inspector Fitzroy Yearwood

“The media, in my eyesight, and you and I were part of that media policy building, you have a responsibility to relay the news as it is to the Belizean public and if you are not given that opportunity by the people that hold that information to disseminate to the Belizean public then we have hypocrisy.  We have people that are using the avenue at their advantage.  If you lay back and allow them to ill-treat the media and lie to the public it’s on you.  I stand in solidarity with the media personnel, I am not going against my department, but when I sat down at the table with them trying to rebuild this relationship between the media and the police, I had a difficult task and for you to try to use me and kick me where I won’t mention on TV and try to believe that you will get away with it, I am prepared to go at war with you.  I am with you.”

The media is scheduled to meet with the heads of the Belize Police Department on Tuesday.
