Top jurist to proceed on his own, December timeline set

Michael Peyrefitte

The decision to refrain from bringing in outside legal experts to lend a hand, says the A.G. would have raised eyebrows locally. Peyrefitte says that assurances have been given that all pending judgments will be delivered by December according to a timeline given by the Chief Justice.

Michael Peyrefitte, Attorney General

“It was laid out as to what these two persons would require, what would be the cost of them coming here and the prime minister was willing to do whatever he needed to do to make sure that the situation was dealt with.  So the prime minister said that we were in the process of securing that; booking for the financing, ensuring that we had the money within the budget to cover that in the event that that would happen.  I had a discussion with the Chief Justice and I indicated to the Chief Justice and he agreed with me as well that we did not like how that looked.  While it’s not unusual for judges to do research and have other people give input in terms of the law and the putting together of judgments, in the climate we did not feel like that would go down well.  We do, proud Kruffy Belizean, but I do know our society; there would be an impression that somebody is writing the judgments for him.  So you would hear that I’m writing the judgments for him, the prime minister is writing it or somebody [else] is writing it.  We did not want that, so the Chief Justice and I agreed that that would not be necessary to bring in anybody to help him.  If he needed to do research or seek information or have ideas that he could bounce off, he could do that on his own, within his own mind [and] deliver the judgments without the need for anybody to physically come here to assist him.  So when we agreed to that I indicated to the prime minister that we would not be needing anybody to come here because the Chief Justice has assured me that that is not necessary and that he is on pace to complete the judgments he said he would complete by December.”
