P.U.P. says no to reappointing Contractor General Godwin Arzu

John Briceno

The Government of Belize has recommended the re-appointment of Contractor General Godwin Arzu for a further two-year term. But if the Opposition had its way, the answer would be no. Arzu has been in the post since 2009. His name was most recently in the news as signing off on the Imer Hernandez-awarded contract for reconstruction of Faber’s Road. But according to Opposition Leader John Briceño, Arzu has not said a peep in terms of a report to the National Assembly and Briceño said he does not have their support to continue in his post.

John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition

“Madam Speaker, I want to put on record our concern about the reappointment of the contractor general, Mr. Godwin Arzu, there are many concerns but I am just going to point out two. It has been quite some time since we have seen a report from the contractor general to this honorable house and secondly madam speaker; week after week we hear about these scandalous contracts that are being issued by BIL or through the government or through the Ministry of Works and supposedly Mr. Godwin Arzu has been approving all of these contracts, It makes us question either his expertise or his ability to do the work or maybe even worse that probably he is a whole part of this scheme that is going on with this government. So madam speaker we on this side cannot support the reappointment of Mr. Godwin Arzu as the contractor general once again.”

The motion is referred to the House’s Constitution and Foreign Affairs Committee.
