Grumbling after Dangriga Convention is Not News

The U.D.P. municipal convention held this weekend in Dangriga has brought into the open the division within the hierarchy of the party.  Former U.D.P. minister Mark King and current Dangriga area rep, Frank “Pawpa” Mena, took to social media this week expressing their concerns and frustration with election tactics to secure votes. Mena went as far as to challenge the U.D.P. to kick him out of the party. Now Mena managed the campaign that secured Francis Humphreys and his slate in 2015 to the town council. But in this recent convention, he was not too pleased that Humphreys defeated Herbert Nicasio by three to one. Speculation is that the bad blood stems from Mena’s support for Belmopan area rep John Saldivar. Today we asked Saldivar if there is infighting within the party.

“As far as I am concerned, I believe that emotions ran high after the convention and that’s all it was. I don’t think that we should take any more out of it than that. I am sure that with time, wounds will be healed and I don’t know that there is any particular infighting that can be referred to at this time, except the results of a convention usually has some acrimony and that’s all it was.”
