Fabers Road Doesn’t Add Up for B.N.T.U.

While COLA is not particularly ecstatic about the cost of government’s latest rejuvenation project, the Belize National Teachers Union is itself taken aback by the seemingly exorbitant price tag of paving a one-mile stretch of road.  According to Elena Smith, for eight million dollars, a lot more could have been done with that sum of money.

“The issue of a contract being awarded to Imer Hernandez for the Faber’s Road renewal project is new and developing.  It is being challenged insofar as the full release of the information in terms of how Mr. Hernandez was able to win this bid and the quantum of money that would be used to pave a one mile stretch of road.  Has the B.N.T.U. management been able to either look at this situation and or take a position on the matter?”

“Our initial reaction is the matter of cost, because we feel as though the length of road and the cost do not match and so that is our initial reaction.  We have not gotten any other information that we could look at to say make a better conclusion on the matter.  I’m sure we have to seek that information and then we’re going to be discussing it, but for now we think that we could have gotten more out of what we are spending.  We have to be very careful on how we spend our public funds and we have to ensure that we get the best for what we are spending and right now we do not feel that that amount of money that will be spent on that one mile of road is going to be properly spent.”
