Andre Carrillo

With more than nine thousand cases of conjunctivitis reported in the last month, chances are you know someone suffering with ‘pinkeye.’ But what happens if that someone is working in the health industry – in this case, with Belize Emergency Response Team? No employer likes losing a worker for the better part of a week, but as BERT’s National Coordinator Andre Carrillo told us Thursday afternoon, it especially hurts when it is the saving of lives that is endangered.

“What has been happening over the last two weeks is that a larger number of employees are out sick because of the conjunctivitis outbreak or pink eye. The staff members – normally, on average, we get about one to two employees a month that are out sick; they are exposed dealing with patients, they are exposed to different ailments out there from being in contact with their families and other co-workers. But over the last two weeks we’ve seen a larger number of employees out as a result of this outbreak and other sicknesses. So in terms of numbers over the last two weeks it has been about seven employees.”
