Mom Says Goodbye to Jason Almendarez

Jason Almendarez

The murder of Jason Almendarez occurred on Tuesday afternoon on Jasmine Street off Mahogany Street in Belize City. Almendarez was purchasing food when he was targeted by a gunman believed to have been carrying out a hit on him. The family believes that a quarrel over money was the motive behind his execution. News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

Was a quarrel over money the motive behind the latest murder in the Old Capital?  Twenty-seven-year-old Jason Almendarez was gunned down on Tuesday afternoon as he purchased food at a popular takeout on Jasmine Street.  His family believes that he may have been killed following an exchange of words with another relative over monies owed to each other.  It’s a lead that police are closely following, despite his grieving mother’s refusal to pursue any action should there be an arrest in the case.  Earlier today, we spoke with Karen Almendarez off-camera.  While she spoke well of her deceased son, she did not shy away from his involvement in the illicit marijuana trade.  The single mother was informed of her son’s demise by her in-laws while at work.

Voice of: Karen Almendarez, Mother of Deceased

“My son Jason Almendarez was one of the coolest, kindest, loving you man you could ever ask about, think about and talk about.  He noh eena no gang-related… He noh associated with no gang, just that my son was just to himself.  Peaceful, quiet, ih have ih lee ups and downs now and again.  That‘s everybody‘s child and that is my child and I love him, peacefully, quietly.  That‘s how I feel about my son.  I want peace within this society ya.  Too much gunshot, too much thing di happen.  We mothers noh supposed to di cry, we mothers supposed to love our kids and love other else kids and that’s how my son was raised, to be cherishable.  And that‘s how I want to remember him as that person who he is.”

“It‘s unfortunate for you as a mother though, as a single parent at that, that this is your second child who has lost his life to gun violence.”

Voice of: Karen Almendarez

“Well to tell you the truth, emotionally, physically, mentally it is another shock to me, I didn‘t expect this.  I faced the first one quietly, but this second one ya hit me hard because seeing your son eena di morning and get a message that your son died eena di afternoon, ih hit yo hard, I didn‘t expect it.  This I will never, ever forget and never can I say I wah get past it.  No I can‘t.”

“Where were you and what were you doing at the point where you learned of your son‘s fate?”

Voice of: Karen Almendarez

“I was at work and my HR come downstairs and tell me ih need fu talk to me.  But first she said two young ladies were outside waiting on me.  And I said two young ladies?  I noh expect nobody fih cohn hail me dah my work.  Well she seh go man, go sih dah who and when I get out deh dah my daughter-in-law and her mother were out there.  When I sih my daughter-in-law di first thing I ask ahn dah weh gaan on?  She seh dah yoh son get shot.  Will I mih think that da di first one get shot.  When I run back inside and when I heard that da my other son get shot I break down because I neva expect it.  I noh expect no kinda news fi come to me dah work and seh yo son just get shot.  No I didn‘t.  That is a shocking and a half weh give me pain eena my heart.  I noh think I could eva tek da pain outta my heart anymore cause dah shocking deh, ih really shock.”

“Now when you came to the hospital was Jason already dead?  Did you get a sense that this was his last breath?  What was that immediate experience or reaction upon coming to the hospital?”

Voice of: Karen Almendarez

“When I come eena my daughter-in-law vehicle di first thing I she “God, whatever di outcome, call him home.”  When I reach ya da di hospital I refuse fu gaan eenside.  I noh wahn lie to you, I refuse fu gaan eenside.  I have a friend that works as an x-ray technician and I have my two daughter weh mi deh out deh with me.  Ma, yoh need fi go inside.  The x-ray technician and my daughter mother hug up me and tell me t least go sih ahn, and dah so comes I had the courage fi gaan inside and ah sih ahn and ah hold ih hand and a tell ah seh whatever it is Jason go in peace.  Ah seh God ah noh like si my son like this.  If yo fi gi mi son like that.”
