In Orange Walk, family clueless as Daniel Carrillo gunned down from behind

Daniel Carillo

Prior to the murder of Justin Hyde, an Orange Walk man was shot and killed in the early hours of Sunday morning. His family is left with more questions than answers because they say he was a quiet and easy going person. Today, they told us he was shot as many as nine times and no one saw anything. All they know is that the killer was on a motorcycle. News Five’s Andrea Polanco spoke with the family today in Orange Walk Town. Here’s what she found out.

Forty-two year old Daniel Carillo was walking here on Temash Street around one on Sunday morning – he was heading home – but he didn’t know he wouldn’t make it back home that morning – because as he turned this corner a man came from behind and fired several shots at him. His family don’t know who killed him or why.

“We were hearing different stories that he went to buy and when he was coming back, they shoot him behind. We got that they found four shells and then we got that he got nine shots; the one that took away his life ws the one behind his head. We don’t know the reason why he was killed or who killed him. We don’t know as yet.”

And while those nine shots didn’t kill him immediately, he later died at the hospital. But not before he told his family that the shooter approached him on a motorcycle – all of this happened just a stone’s throw away from his family’s home.

“He was killed right around the corner. My mom she was still awake. She heard the noise and she thought it was a zinc that dropped or something. When my dad came out he saw my cousins going and so when my dad went that is when he saw Danny lying down – he was shot. So, he came and told my mom and she went there and they picked him up and took him to the hospital. But we don’t know why or what happened or who killed him.”

“When your family went on the scene, was he able to talk or to say anything at all?”

Voice of: Marny Chable

“Well, as far as I know, he was still alive. He was just able to say that it was someone on a cycle; it was someone on a cycle who shot him. No one saw anything. There was no one outside; no one saw anything. The other neighbours did say that they heard a cycle just flying by, but no one saw anything or who it was; they don’t know anything more.”

The family says that Carrillo was easy going and never indicated if he had any problems. He spent most of his time with his relatives. Carrillo spent many years living in the US where his three children live. When he returned to Belize he went to San Pedro for a while but a few months ago he came back to his hometown of Orange Walk. He worked here at his family owned water business – his sister hopes his killer will be brought to justice.

Voice of: Marny Chable

“I hope we find the person that did his because for whatever reason that it happened we are hoping to get justice for my brother. If the person, if he is out there, we will just leave it as is in God’s hands and may he repent or ask for forgiveness for what he did but we will leave it to God.”
