Guats revoke corruption boss’ visa; name ex-Belize ambassador deputy for foreign affairs

Ivan Velasquez Gomez

And this news from Guatemala, immigration authorities there have revoked the visa of Ivan Velasquez, the  head of the CICIG, the United Nations  body investigating corruption in that country. The official reason provided is that the visa was not issued by the competent authorities and so it was revoked a week after it was granted. Velasquez was declared a persona-no-grata last August by the president of Guatemala, Jimmy Moralez. The CICIG was seeking to have his immunity lifted so he could be investigated for less than a million dollars to his campaign that was not accounted for. There was huge international outcry and Morales stayed his hand. In the past few days, Velasquez has also come under fire from former president and Mayor Alvaro Arzu who has called the Commissioner incompetent. Rosanna Baldetti, the former Vice President who remains behind bars for alleged acts of corruption, has also come out against Velasquez. At this time, it is not known what is the next step for Velasquez. But as it relates to the former Ambassador to Belize Manuel Estuardo Roldan Barillas who was recalled by the government at the height of the tensions when the a young Guatemalan was killed in the Chiquibul in April 2016, he has been named Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, after the shapeup in the Ministry following the ouster of the former Foreign Minister Carlos Raul Morales.
