Welcome Resource Center Reports Attacks on Homeless as Michael Garbutt Murdered

Michael Garbutt

A homeless man was murdered in Belize City. He was found lying dead in the San Cas Plaza parking lot in Belize City. He has been identified as sixty-year-old Michael Garbutt.  According to reports, Garbutt has been homeless for many years and his regular route would be in the San Cas Area. We were informed that almost every night he would sleep around the parking lot area. Operators there say that he was very peaceful and friendly with everyone. They say that they believe he was beaten in some other part of the City and he died in the parking lot. Around two-thirty this morning, the security guard of the establishment was on patrol when he found Garbutt dead. He was dressed in a long blue jeans pants and brown t-shirt and didn’t have on any footwear. Garbutt had injuries to the jaw and the back of the head. We spoke with Administrator of the Welcome Resource Center who told us that Garbutt had mental problems but he was easy going. He was last seen at the center a few days ago.

Joyce Ellis, Administrator, Welcome Resource Center

“Michael was one of our participant here at the Welcome Resource Center. He is not a regular participant but he comes here from time to time and when he comes he is always hasty. He wants everything to get done quickly and he would spend at least forty-five minutes at the kitchen window because he liked to sing. He loved everybody and he is always talking about I love you and popping kisses and things like that even when he sees people on the streets. Michael has a mental issue, we know. But for me, Andrea, it is becoming over burdening now for us because the population that we serve are being harmed almost on a regular basis; some that we know, some that we don’t know.  Michael was here day before yesterday and he was here before that last week and he was here in September because we usually a patriotic event and he has never missed it. I don’t know really if Michael has any immediate family. We don’t have any information on his family and the only thing we know is his name is Michael Garbutt; we don’t even know his age. Our fond memory of him is that every time we get him to change his clothes, he wants back the dirty one and we would say no and he says he wants it back and he would leave here with the one we give him and by the time we see him out there he would have on the clean one and the dirty one – all the clothes. He had this style of just pacing up and down; walking from one place to the next. He is not a violent person, so he would shout things and so on but someone in their mental condition would do things like that.”

“When Michael was last here did you notice any signs of violence on his body?”

Joyce Ellis

“No. There weren’t any signs of violence on Michael’s body. Like I said, all he does is to wear three four, five shirts, pants. Sometimes he would be bare-footed and sometimes he would have one footwear on. But there wasn’t any sign of violence on his body and besides him being mentally ill, we don’t know of any other illness that he had that would cause him to pass away this soon.”

Andrea Polanco

“He never reported if he would be attacked on the streets and things like that?”

Joyce Ellis

“No. He never reported it.”
