Administrator Warns Leave the Homeless Alone

Joyce Ellis

Garbutt lived on the streets and that made him vulnerable – like all others who use bus stops, streets and other public spaces for shelter. Joyce Ellis of the Welcome Resource Center says that others who live on the street are also exposed to harm and she asks the public to refrain from disturbing or hurting the homeless many of whom are mentally ill. Ellis says that other homeless persons are subjected to violence in the streets – and in light of upcoming Mental Health Day locals are being called upon to do more for this vulnerable group.

Joyce Ellis, Administrator, Welcome Resource Center

“I must say that we had another participant who was involved in an altercation and we had to get him into the gang risk house and sometimes it is very difficult to get them indoors because they have lived all their life outside. But not until we sat and spoke to him about the dangers of being out there and he has been there for two years now and it is not every one that wants to be inside because of their mental state and we need to appreciate these people for who they are.   I am appealing to the general public, if you see a mental patient, please do not disturb them. You could be just one episode away from being where this person is at and you wouldn’t like for anyone to treat a family member or even yourself in that way when you see them. Leave them alone. Let them be. I want to take this opportunity also to say that on October 10th is World Mental Health Day and it is mental health in the work place. But even so, I am asking that people wear green on that day and just remember the persons who suffer mental illness and how you could be of some assistance to them. It doesn’t mean you have to interact with that individual. Plan a meal; bring breakfast or something special for the mentally ill during this month of October.”
