City Council Thinks It Should Not Pay G.S.T.; Audit Says It Owes $5 Mil

Dion Leslie

Earlier this year, the Auditor General’s annual report for 2012-2013 cited multiple instances of irregularities in several government departments, particularly the Ministries of Works and Education and the Belize Defence Force. Another concerns monies lost by the General Sales Tax Department in respect of collections. The Belize City Council and Belize Maintenance Limited/Belize Waste Control is one example. The Council refused to pay over five million dollars in taxes for both companies as a result of the takeover of sanitation duties at that time and the case was lodged with the Ministry of Finance. According to Councilor in Charge of Sanitation Dion Leslie, the matter is not completely resolved as it has to do with whether the council should be paying G.S.T. at all.

Dion Leslie, Belize City Councilor

“I would have to check with the City Administrator and with our Director of Finance. It’s an issue I am aware of and I know they have been dialoguing back and forth with the relevant Government authorities to see how we can best resolve it. City Council as – basically an offshoot of Government, we should not really pay G.S.T. at that – even when we deal with contracts it becomes an issue. But it’s something that our City Administrator and, I know, our Director of Finance are in discussion with, and if not resolved already, should be resolved soon.”

These and other cases are scheduled to be discussed by Auditor General Dorothy Bradley when she visits the Public Accounts Committee of the House of Representatives later this month.

  1. truth says:

How in the world can this friggin government owe income tax while every one else pays all kind of tax.

what else are we waiting for to take our country back. this is ENOUGH!

if you ask PM Dean Barrow:

There are no problems the country is in perfect condition and hey why not lets leave criminals go free such as the Immigration scandal, murders because our police officers are NOT sufficiently trained or managed BY the head of departments they have .. lets make truce with the gangs.. raise gas prices which will have a price change on everything else leading to groceries but hey who cares.. we are still charging our citizens tax on all items..plus when the Belizean Citizens know or realize whats we are doing and not paying TAX or doing our jobs as GOVERNMENT.. it wont matter cause they are forgetful and they will still vote for us. just pay them 50 bills or another false promise and we good..

    WHO CARES RIGHT??????????????????????????????
