‘Pink Eye’ Rises and So Do Prices for Medication

The country is battling an outbreak of conjunctivitis – or what is better known as ‘pink-eye’. The outbreak is also affecting Mexico, Panama and Costa Rica. And while the Ministry of Health has put out a number of announcements to raise awareness to avoid the spreading of the pink-eye – there are still hundreds of reported cases in the country with a bulk of the reports in the north and west. Many are opting to purchase prescribed treatment and are reporting that there has been a number of pharmacies that have increased the price of the eye-drops or ointments. Consumers believe the prices have almost doubled in some pharmacies. Today, we spoke with President Beverly Coleman of the Pharmacy Association. She told us that there are reports of increase in prices, but they cannot say for sure if it is a direct effect of price gouging. Coleman told us that there has been a shortage of the treatment and as a result, suppliers are selling at a higher price.
