Support Coming In from Diaspora

Mario Lara

Since its inception and inaugural voyage a year ago, the BTV initiative has seen support from Belizeans in the Diaspora.  Heading a team of fundraisers from California is Belizean/American volunteer Mario Lara.  Together with several others in the States, he has been able to raise enough funds to contribute as prize monies for the growing competition.

“So obviously, putting on an event like this requires a lot of resources and takes a bit of money to put together.  So myself, I started a Go Fund Me account and with the support of many Belizeans abroad and some of my good friends, we did a backyard fundraiser.  I have to say thank you to Rolando Fabro and his family and his wife.  We were able to come in and support the event with the prize monies and some of that sort of stuff, plus we want to provide transportation to encourage as much spectators as possible to come out, get to know their country and support the participants in the event.  So we have a bus that’s going to be leaving from Cayo.  It’s going to be leaving at four a.m. sharp from in front of Falcon Field.  So if you want to get on that bus, please give me a call at 607-8000 so that we can reserve a spot for you.  That bus will also pick up people at Belmopan, so if you’re in Belmopan and you want to go, give me a call and we’ll reserve a spot for you.  I believe that there is a bus going from Orange Walk, contact the De la Fuentes… and then a bus from Belize City.  So we’re trying to encourage as many spectators as possible to go down and enjoy.  It’s a family oriented event so it’s not only a time to get to know your country but, you know, there’ll be a football marathon and the food vendors will be out there.  We’ll have music and I just learned today that the world famous Cocono Bwai will be there and he will be performing his famous hit, ‘Border to Border’ live at the event.”
