How Will Final Report Be Written?

The final report of the Senate Special Select Committee will be highly anticipated. It has already been guaranteed that it will not likely lead to criminal charges unless there is further investigation by police and the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. But how exactly will the report be written – and might there be more than one? While Chairman Senator Aldo Salazar can’t wait to get to that point, his colleague Mark Lizarraga urged caution, as he feels there is still much to investigate before any conclusions can be properly drawn.

“People take issue with me when I call it my report because they feel that I’m claiming ownership of the report, but as the chair, I am to prepare the first draft. It’s not my report; it is a report of the committee to the senate. I feel that the preparation of the report—it depends on how often we meet—I think as a committee we may be able to meet in Belize City. I don’t see us consuming any government resources in doing that. I don’t see any need for that. It will properly take in excess of a month to do that, I feel.”

“I haven’t bothered myself with the logistic of that as yet; I am still in the process of the investigation. When the investigation is complete, then we will all have to go after the volumes and volumes and volumes of material that we have. We have an attorney that may help us, that may guide us in that process. The chairman is tasked, but I am sure he won’t probably write it himself; I don’t know. I’m sure that probably our attorney will contribute to that and then we can all have input into the editing or the adding or deleting or whatever. We have the right to have a minority report so if there is something in the report that I do not agree with, I have the right to write my own report as it relates to that specific section to say I agree with this, but I don’t agree with that. So we all have the same opportunity to contribute to the report. Collectively at the end of the day, we will all have the opportunity to have input into the report.”
