Triple the Joy for New Mom at K.H.M.H.

A Belize City first time mom delivered triplets last week. Two boys and a girl were delivered by Doctor Jose Guerra at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.  Today the young mother introduced the babies to the media. On hand for the occasion were the Ministry of Health and several corporate donors who gifted the babies with a trove of goodies including diapers.  At the event, K.H.M.H. announced that the maternity bills were waived for the mother and the hospital will be celebrating with the kids for their birthday. News Five’s Andrea Polanco introduces the triplets in the following story.

Twenty-year-old Virginia Garnett is emotional today – she has been for the past week since giving birth to three babies. She is the mother of triplets: Marlon, Malrick and Miracle – two boys and a girl. They were born on Tuesday, September fifth at the KHMH. The triplets, each weighing an average of five pounds, were delivered by C-section a few weeks early. And to celebrate their birth, the triplets got a special ceremony in their honor.

“It’s the first triplets for this year at KHMH. I haven’t heard about any in the country so far. There was one year before that we had three triplets for the year, but that was some years ago.   They were born via C-section because it is three babies and the mommy didn’t have complications after.   They were a few weeks before the due date and so we had to observe them for a few days. They fed well and breastfed and they went home and doing well so far.”

Garnett, a first time mom of Belize City, says she was in complete shock when she found out she was having three babies when she went for an ultrasound.

Virginia Garnett

“She di search. She di search and I see she turn to my friend and do so – she put up three fingers and open ih mouth wide. And she mi di look pahn me but I neva di pay ah no mind. She tell me, ‘Miss, you know you have three baby inna your belly?’ I nuh say nothing. I just sit down on the bed fi five minutes and stare up inna the sky and all kinda things start run through my mind and I start talk to the docta and she tell me and I gone inna like wah different world just now. And I mi really shock but happy and thing.”

And those several months later were a bit challenging carrying three babies – so when the delivery came around she was glad – she recounts what those moments were like.

Virginia Garnett

“One spell it mi mek I can’t do nothing, nothing. My ma and my lee bredda dem mi have to do everything fi me. Even if something drop right front ah me, somebody mi have to come pick that up because I can’t even bend or sleep how I want. But fi the last few weeks, I start to feel pain up inna my back.  One spell I feel like I neva mi wah mek it and I tell the man, ‘Sir, mek we pray.’ And he say awrite then mek we pray inna head and by the time I done say the Our Father I hear the first bawling and I feel happy and like I wah get up and all but dah only yuh head yuh could move and thing. And the man say that that dah the first baby and I feel happy, happy.”

And now that she has her triplets – Garnett needs all the support she can get. She says her mother has stepped up big time – and others came to celebrate these three little ones – they came bearing gifts for babies and mom – from diapers, hygiene products to clothing to baby food – Garnett and her babies were showered with gifts today.
