Irma races for Florida, leaving destruction across Northern Caribbean

Since the start of this week we have been showing you the devastation of Hurricane Irma across the Caribbean, particularly the Leeward Islands. St Barthelemy, St Maarten, Barbuda and several others have seen massive destruction in the millions of dollars. Puerto Rico was also in Irma’s path and now over a million residents are without power. There has been massive flooding and damage of homes and infrastructure in that island. On Thursday night the storm passed over Providenciales of the Turks and Caicos Islands and it still remains unclear how much damage has been caused there as many parts of the island are impassable. Some online reports say it is catastrophic in some parts of Providenciales with massive destruction to the infrastructure. Another area that has been hit hardest is the British Virgin Islands – some reports say that several persons lost their lives and almost thirty remain missing.  The storm has been shifting between category four and five levels – and for the most part of today it weakened a bit – and caused some flooding and loss of homes in Dominican Republic and Haiti. At the moment, while it will not directly hit Cuba, it is passing over that island as a category four and is expected to make landfall in the Florida Keys as a category 5 hurricane in the next day or so; with southern Florida bracing for a hit on early Sunday and the storm is expected to drift over the entire state. Here’s a clip from CNN where a reporter is on the ground in Cuba showing what the storm is like as it passes over.

This afternoon the Belize Embassy in Cuba headed by Ambassador Annie Burns tweeted “Glad that all Belizean students across Cuba are being smart & keeping safe during Hurricane Irma.”
