Best friends Faber, Saldivar clash over Vega

Two of the most powerful men in the ruling United Democratic Party appear at odds over support for embattled Orange Walk North area representative Gaspar Vega. Deputy Prime Minister and first Deputy U.D.P. Leader Patrick Faber wrote on Facebook on Wednesday from Belize City that “For those wondering, especially on a day like today, I do not support or defend corruption and my expectations are that those in our beloved U.D.P. don’t either!” Notably, Faber lost to Vega in 2013 in the race for the slot he currently holds, first deputy party leader. Then as now,Belmopanarea representative John Saldivar stood firmly with Vega, who returned the favor during Saldivar’s own failed bid against Faber in May of 2016 for the same post. In a lengthy Facebook statement buttressing his press interviews in Orange Walk, Saldivar reiterated that he is supporting Vega against a P.U.P. leadership which he says has no moral authority to judge his friend because of their own peccadilloes and because of the legal concept of innocence until guilt is proven. According to Saldivar, the party should not abandon Vega in his time of need, because he stepped forward in theirs. Nonetheless, Saldivar notes that he too stands against corruption and will work for stronger anti-corruption laws to be passed before the end of the current term, but also calls for greater party unity to plead their case to the electorate. Saldivar has also noted that he and Faber are good friends, so we guess they agreed to disagree on this one.
