Call Center Employees Call Out Owners for Hard-Pay

About twenty employees of the little known “United Association for Healthy Living” are claiming that they are owed salaries for two pay periods. The call center located on Mercy Lane in Belize City is foreign owned but has a local manager. The local employees say that for several months they have had to go around in circles to collect their monies. They also allege that the company has defaulted in paying social security contributions for workers.  Today, they say that police officers were called to put them out of the building and now they believe that the company is trying to shake them of their hard earned monies and close up shop. One of the persons who say the company owes her spoke to us off camera.

Voice of: Former Employee, United Association for Healthy Living

“We have been having the same issues over and over and over. We have already worked for the entire week and then when it is time for us to get our pay, we work on Fridays, in cash, when time to receive our pay it is always a hassle. We usually receive it through western union – they wire it from wherever they are. Every week leading up to when we are supposed to get paid, you hear that deh di stop it.  We are looking to end another pay period and we haven’t been paid for the previous pay period. It is frustrating because school start Monday and a lot of people in here have kids and they can’t ker deh kids to school. Yuh cyaa send pickney dah school if yuh nuh got no money? Why? Deh need fi eat, deh need book, everything. So everybody frustrated right now. In the beginning, I won’t lie, pay was going ok. After a while you start hear that this di happen with money and they can’t wire the money and all kinda trouble start to happen after that. Deh hire people every week. This dah wah joke yuh know. Dis dah wah circus deh di run.”

“So are they closing down the operations right now? Is that what they are saying?”

Voice of: Former Employee

The manager did not offer comments.
