Churches Frown on Sunday Tenth Parade

The September celebrations are off to a start, but tonight the Belize Council of Churches is not pleased that the Tenth Day parade will be held on Sunday, the tenth of September. In a release issued today the Council says that while it recognizes that the national holiday of the Battle of Saint George’s Caye falls on the Sunday; that day is the Lord’s Day set aside for majority of Christians to worship in their respective congregations.  The statement says that using the Sunday to hold a secular parade undermines our belief as a God-fearing nation to keep Sunday worship as an important part of religious tradition and heritage. The Council of Churches goes on to express its dismay saying that the current administration has given assurances that steps will be taken to avoid this situation in the future. However, the Council remains appalled that the organizers did not see it fit to uphold a long-held tradition and understanding between Church and State that the celebrations that fall on a Sunday will be observed on the Monday.
