C.W.U. Defends Former Executive Amy Forte

Amy Forte

The outcry continues to grow tonight in relation to the Mosquito Caye/Caye Caulker land scandal involving an attempted swap of land in both locations by Andre Vega, son of former Lands Minister Gaspar Vega. This involved the reported forgery of the signature of Belmopan resident Amy Forte on a deed of conveyance approved by Justice of the Peace and former Lands employee Darlene Padron. Forte has successfully gotten Prime Minister and Lands Minister Dean Barrow to intervene and cancel the respective documents, with separate investigations by police and the Attorney General’s Ministry underway.  Tonight, the Christian Workers’ Union, of whose executive Amy Forte was a member as treasurer, has offered her its support.  The union states that Belize is at a critical milestone where it must choose to deliver itself from corruption and injustice or be lost, and that its citizens are its game changers.  C.W.U. President Dale Trujeque told us this evening that he was absolutely shocked to see her name called. He added that police should not be dictated by the Prime Minister, but carry out their investigation fairly and impartially, including finding out the name of the “land agent” fingered by Andre Vega in the fraudulent transaction.

“Total consternation, and at the same time I had one conviction: I firmly believe that she knew nothing about that. Without even hearing what her attorney had written, I firmly believed she wasn’t involved in that matter, so it was just a matter of time.  Immediately, my first thing was, oh, that’s interesting – so there’s a land agent involved; mek wi find out who dah the land agent, and wi wah know if the land agent worked inside the Department itself; all of these things need to come out. My concern about the whole matter, is when I opened the Guardian and I saw the Guardian said, ‘P.M. directs an inquiry…’ [The] P.M. can’t direct the police and should not be directing the police; [he] does not need to make a request. As the press release says, that is forgery; that is a crime; and it’s the police’s job to investigate it, and we want to have the trust and confidence that the Commissioner will see this one through the proper way.”

Lets see how the politically appointed ComPol will deal with this. Lets see if Andre Vega, JP Padron, and the land agent are dealt with according to the law. Lets see if we, the Belizean people, get our land and money back. Lets see . . . .

But even the police department is corrupt. What do we expect from them. The Compol weights until he gets directive from the politician to do his job. We are in a terrible situation of injustice here in Belize.
