S.J.C. Vs. Wesley in Charity Basketball

Some good old thrash-talking among a group of friends at a recent basketball game has given rise to a one-of-a-kind initiative spearheaded by Wesley College alum O.J. Elrington.  Tonight, past graduates from Saint John’s College will be facing their cross town rivals in a series of matches to raise funds for a scholarship program that will benefit students of both secondary schools.  If you are familiar with the history of the institutions, it should come as no surprise that there has been an age-old rivalry between the two schools.  That competitiveness will come to a head at the SCA Auditorium, where the games will be played for a worthy cause.  We caught up with former SJC and Wesley students Fred Gabourel and Orson Elrington who told us about the challenge.

“The event is called the Wesley versus SJC Rivalry All-Star Challenge.  It’s basically a charity fundraiser for scholarships to both institutions, but Freddy can tell you more about that.”

“Basically it started from a casual basketball game where my team was beating OJ’s team and again during our sports argument we started to talk about back in the days, you know, and we realized that the competition back in the days compared to what it is now, at least at the high school level, is so far gone it’s scary even to think about it.  …OJ actually spearheaded this initiative, he said, “Bwai mek we come together and see what we could do to try and get it back.”  One of the ways we think that we could get it back is to develop some type of, and we want to make this an annual event, but develop some type of program in which we offer scholarships to both schools.  Right now we’re dealing with basketball.  We want to start off with basketball because I think that’s something we’re passionate about, both myself and Orson, and he has more track and field and other sports.  But basketball is something that we wanted to start off with, giving both schools scholarships as much as we can.  The aim was two full scholarships, including books, tuition and what-have-you.  So that’s what we’re aiming for this weekend.”

“So how does this work in terms of the fundraising aspect of it?”

Orson Elrington

“Well, the competition is a challenge and it’s going to be held at the SCA auditorium and therefore the money created from the patrons of the event and we have certain sponsors who insure that we have minimal expenses by providing us with sponsorship in kind.  So basically we’re going to be getting the revenue from the ticket sales on that night and then any other sponsorships that persons might want to do thereafter.”

Tickets are on sale at the door and all proceeds will go to the scholarship program.
