Sedi Elrington Pays Tribute; Warns Belize Cannot Be ‘Scapegoat’

The unrest is particularly worrisome for Elrington who says that Belize must now be extremely conscientious of its relationship with its neighbor since the territorial dispute can be used as a smoke screen to distract Guatemalans from internal conflicts.

Wilfred ‘Sedi’ Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs

“Whenever you have these occurrences in our region, particularly in Guatemala, it gives me great concern, I will confess that.  I think we need to be studiously careful as to how we operate now with the Guatemalans because when they have internal conflicts they tend to look for scapegoats and Belize has got to be super careful to ensure that no attention is turned to us while they’re going through their own internal problems.”

“Now you have served alongside Mr. Carlos Raul Morales.  You have many times and much to the ire of the Belizean citizenry, you’ve called him your friend.  How do you feel now that he is quite suddenly departed the post and do you know who his successor will be?”

“No.  I don’t know who his successor will be.  I don’t even know if they have appointed one but I will tell you that I’ve had a fairly good relationship with almost all the Guatemalan foreign ministers that I’ve worked with.  I remember working very closely with Haroldo Rodas.  Very, very good, very nice person and President Colon, very nice person.  I went along very well with them.  I’m hoping and praying that in fact we’ll be able to have the same kind of good relationship with whoever succeeds Carlos Raul Morales.  Yes, he was very, very helpful to us.  As a matter of fact, whenever we had any difficulties I would be able to call him wherever he was in the world and he would be able to call me when we have border disputes and the like.  It is important that you have people who can understand what the situation is and help to seek to calm the fears of both nations.  So he did that for a long time, I’m very grateful to him for what he did but I understand the realities of politics and we have got to make sure that whoever succeeds him, we seek to engage that person in the same kind of good, cordial way in which we engaged Carlos Raul.”

  1. Belizean Boy says:

We, the ordinary, “normal” Belizean, need to be ‘studiously careful’ and it is of grave concern that YOU, Mr. Minister do not make Belize a smokescreen for Guatemala…Many, many Belizeans do NOT trust you sir. We have seen you as the worse foreign affairs minister in the history of Belize. History will NOT absolve you of all your wrongdoings.
