Airports Authority to be Shaken Up; Minister Says Finances Are Not an Issue

Manuel Heredia Jr.

Reports have been circulating that the chairman of the Belize Airports Authority resigned. According to Prime Minister Dean Barrow, it may have been based on concerns raised by an ex-employee, though it is not clear if these concerns have to do with misappropriation of funds. But the Minister in charge of Civil Aviation, Manuel Heredia Junior, cleared up the concerns today, stating that he will soon be making decisions on who will remain on the board, as well as the fate of the general manager. He pointed to a consultancy process done two to three years ago, as well as an audit report that he said cleared the authority on any corrupt practices or unauthorized expenditure.

Manuel Heredia Jr., Minister of Civil Aviation

“What I can tell you is that we had a consultant that had done a job for the Belize Airport Authority about two, three years ago and we are now doing strategic changes that will be made. There might be some that – one or two – that might have to go; others that will be coming in and I believe that there are two that are in already. But at some point also, I have the job every year to appoint a new board if I wish; if I want any of them to remain that is up to me. And that is what I believe that at the end of the year, most of them have been serving for three years now so I am sure that there will be some changes in the board also. Probably the general manager, I don’t know up to now if he will leave, but there can be that possibility.”

“So the chairman has resigned?”

Manuel Heredia Jr.

“Not until now. He might, but until now, he still remains there.”

“Reports, again these may not be accurate, but reports are also circulating that he may resign because of expenditure that he made.”

Manuel Heredia Jr.

“Well at this point, I can tell you there is the audit report. All audit reports will find room for improvements over there, but there is nothing in the audit that said that there is any corruption…”

“…or unauthorized expenditures?”

Manuel Heredia Jr.

“…not to my knowledge.”

According to Heredia, transactions involving money at the BAA have to be authorized either by the Board or in conjunction with the minister.

Hell, just put Castro back in the mix. I wonder if he every paid back the money that he “misappropriated” a few years back?
