Gov’t uses savings for road works in Twin Towns

On Monday, the Government of Belize, through the Ministry of Works and Transport, signed a multimillion-dollar road rehabilitation project for Santa Elena Town. Valued at fewer than seven million dollars, the construction contract was successfully won by Belize Roadway Construction Limited to carry out drainage and pavement works on the George Price Highway between Three Flags and Loma Luz Boulevard intersection; as well as Liberty Street.  It will also cover one point two miles along George Price Avenue between Loma Luz Blvd. intersection and Hawksworth Bridge. The works, which are to start immediately, are expected to bring much-needed economic stimulus to the San Ignacio/Santa Elena areas, including employment for residents. C.E.O. in the Ministry of Works Errol Gentle explains how the project is being funded.

“This is a part of the fourth Road Project being sponsored by the Government of Belize and the Caribbean Development Bank and as you can remember, we had four different sections of work being done under the Fourth Road project. The last one, before this, what we are signing being the bridge…which was lot two which has completed but has not been inaugurated as yet. so this morning we will be signing lot five which was put out to tender and the successful contractor was Belize Roadway Company Limited and this contract is for the sum of six million nine hundred and sixty-eight thousand nine hundred and fifty-five dollars and forty cents. The overall fund for the Fourth Road Project, the monies that we are using today is actually savings after we did the first four lots and it shows, ladies and gentlemen, good project management, good fiscal management.”
