P.M. Says Lisa Shoman Under IDB Investigation for Elrington Comments

On Thursday, former Foreign Minister Lisa Shoman publicly criticized current Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington for his repeated statements suggesting that Belize does not have internationally recognized borders, especially with Guatemala. She went as far as to convey skepticism about Belize moving forward with resolving the unfounded claim at the International Court of Justice. But could it affect her job with the Inter-American Development Bank, where she is a member of an arbitral tribunal? Prime Minister Dean Barrow suggested as much today while sidestepping from a response to what Elrington said.

“I’m not sure if I will respond to that letter; I just got something today from the I.D.B. you see, a while ago. Miss Shoman is a member of a tribunal that deals with staff matters; there is now a complaint made against her in consequence of what she said with respect to the Foreign Minister and the whole issue of borders and so on. I don’t know what the details are; I haven’t seen the letter she sent to me, but I better leave that alone, in the event that Miss Shoman might want to re-think her position in consequence of what is happening at the I.D.B.”
