Police Say Shot O.W. Man Challenged Customs Officers at Yo Creek

Dwayne Almendarez

Thirty-year-old Dwayne Almendarez, an Orange Walk resident of the Union Town area tonight remains in a critical but stable condition at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital after he was shot by a Customs Officer. While the Customs Department denied giving an interview or any information on the incident, today, the Police Department provided further details of the shooting which happened just before five o’clock on Tuesday evening.  A custom officer supported by B.D.F. soldiers conducted a search on a passenger bus in Yo Creek Village where they attempted to confiscate contraband goods. An altercation ensued during which Almendarez assaulted the officers.  The passengers threw rocks at the team, who fired a warning shot. But that did not deter Almendarez, and the customs officer, according to police, in fear of his life pulled out his nine millimeter pistol and fired several shots, injuring Almendarez. He was transported to the Northern Regional Hospital and later to the K.H.M.H. where he is recovering tonight.
