N.C.I.B. to process Chunox file to D.P.P.

The Professional Standards Branch of the Belize Police Department is inundated with cases of alleged police misconduct and there were several updates coming out of Monday’s press conference with its head, Assistant Commissioner Chester Williams. Back in June, Chunox resident, Richard Allen Garcia, got into a stand-off with police. The officers dispatched from Corozal Town said he came at them with a machete, forcing them to use gunfire to put him down and ultimately kill him. It resulted in residents getting riled up, but where is the investigation now? It is officially, according to Williams, in the hands of his colleagues at National Crimes Investigation Branch, who will be responsible to correspond with the Director of Public Prosecutions on whether any charges will be brought.

“The Chunox incident, took place prior to me taking over as commander P.S.B., but I can tell you that from inquiries that I have made and follow ups, the file is currently being prepared to be sent to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and she will be the one to make that determination as to whether or not to file any criminal charges against the police officers concern or to send the matter to coroner’s inquest. So that matter will be sent to the D.P.P for determination.”

According to Williams he has not seen the file as N.C.I.B. is officially in charge of the investigation.
