Police “Officially” Confirm Suspects in Kevin Brown Beating, including Jafari Castro

Jafari Castro

After a week of much hesitancy and serious backpedaling, the Belize Police Department has finally confirmed the names of three men, including Jafari Castro, who are wanted for the vicious beat down of a university athlete.  But police is still not able to determine Jafari’s whereabouts. According to Minister Edmond Castro, in an interview with News Five, one of his sons left the country last Sunday. Twenty-one-year-old Kevin Brown was beaten into a coma by a mob of young men while he was away in San Pedro last Saturday at the annual Costa Maya Festival.  The mayhem which resulted in him being knocked unconscious, reportedly with a fire extinguisher, was over a bracelet.  While Brown was airlifted to Belize City for emergency medical attention and continues to recover from the incident, his attackers remain on the lam.  On Saturday, warrants for the arrest of Jafari Castro, Gilbert Franklin Junior and James Young Junior were finally issued, despite police not being able to locate either of the three men.  Up until late this evening, confirmation on whether Jafari Castro has indeed left the country is yet to be made.  What we do know is that one of the Castro siblings is presently out of Belize.  This morning, Assistant Commissioner of Police Edward Broaster provided an update to the press and sought to clarify the mix-up that has been reported by the police department’s Media Relations Unit.

“I cannot share with you how the incident with Kevin Brown unfolded, but I can tell you that the investigation has led us to the issuance of three warrants for Jafari Castro, Gilbert Franklin and James Young.  A couple days ago, we managed to record a statement from Mr. Kevin Brown and we have gotten statements from other witnesses which have enabled us to issue these warrants.”

Isani Cayetano

“Can you clarify for us what may have been a confusion in terms of at least the Castro brother being named in the first instance and then the police department having mentioned that this individual wasn’t wanted for questioning at that time or anything involving the incident and now you have since walked that back to issue a warrant for his arrest.”

“Well I have not walked back anything.  I can tell you that whilst their names were called, there was nothing official and I believe that was the message that the press office conveyed to the media, that there was nothing official regarding that issue.  We have something official now, hence the reason why the warrants were issued for the three individuals named.”

“Sir would you concede though that while the police department was making that stance that they cannot call their names, it is perceived or can be perceived that the police department walked back and it looks like it’s political.”

ACP Edward Broaster

“I would not concede to that.  Like I said, we report on facts and we tried our best to be accurate to the media.  So when the media asks specific questions, specific answers are given to the media.”
