“Weche” Eludes Belmopan Police 10 Days after Murder

Samuel Mendez

Belmopan police continue looking for twenty-two-year-old Angel Antonio Orellano, also known as Weche, in connection with the July thirty-first murder of twenty year-old Samuel Mendez, a Salvapan resident and security guard. Mendez was chopping grass at the yard of a relative when he was shot around seven-thirty a.m.  He attempted to flee from his attacker, but collapsed and died. Initial reports are that the fatal shooting was triggered by an old conflict between both men. Today, officer commanding Belmopan Police, Senior Superintendent Howell Gillett, said their attempts to run down Orellano have not worked out so far, but they will not give up.

“There’s no update in terms of finding the person; we are following a number of leads. All leads that are reported to us we have followed but they have proved futile. We have been following a number of them – some of them are nowhere near the truth, because you are getting reports in one area that he is there and simultaneously he’s at another location. I don’t want to say what we believe occurred, but we are doing our best to try to bring him into custody and we continue to appeal to the public to – if you’ve seen him – we appeal to the public to assist us: if he is seen in any area or any part of the country, it doesn’t have to be Belmopan, call the nearest police station at 911 or the Belmopan Police at 822-0201.”

“I was going to ask specially if there was any part of Belmopan or elsewhere that he was known to frequent.”

Sr. Supt. Howell Gillett

“He was known to frequent the Costa Rica extension area, but I believe as a result of him being a wanted person that that may have changed, and he may have moved elsewhere.”

Orellano stands five feet eight inches tall with light brown complexion and brown eyes. Police also believe Orellano is armed and dangerous. Police are appealing to the public to assist in locating Orellano. Anyone with information is asked to call the nearest police station or Belmopan at 802-0201.
