Anna Guy Looks to Upset the Odds to Return as U.D.P. Belmopan Councilor

In political news….earlier this week, incumbent councilor for Belmopan, Anna Banner Guy, finds herself the odd woman out at the United Democratic Party convention scheduled for Sunday, August thirteenth. Guy topped the polls in the last municipal election and has been active among the city’s youth, but it appears she is on the outs because she supported Patrick Faber for deputy party leader over Belmopan area representative John Saldivar last May.  A Facebook battle raged earlier this week where she accused her own party of intending to humiliate her and called out fellow councilors for not standing with her.  Today, we caught up with her in Belmopan and she reiterated that she intends to be one of those left standing on stage at the Belmopan Civic Center after all the votes are counted.

“It’s unfortunate and it really caught me off-guard; and it’s surprising to me that after serving two terms as a Belmopan City councilor and having applied to become a councilor candidate with the hope to serve a third term along with our Mayor and Council, that I am not on the U.D.P. slate. So that really caught me by surprise and it’s unfortunate that it seems it’s like six against one. But I believe that Belmopan will come out on Sunday, August thirteenth between ten to five at the Belmopan City Center and really speak through their vote.”

“Explain for me how many incumbents are running again, along with yourself, and the newcomers?”

Anna Banner Guy

“Three newcomers and three incumbents.”

“And those are a slate along with the mayor, it would seem?”

Anna Banner Guy

“Yes. The mayor is being endorsed; the convention is really just to eliminate one councilor candidate.”

“In terms of your plans and how you will attack this convention, talk to us about what you want Belmopanese to remember when they come out to vote on Sunday.”

Anna Banner Guy

“I’m the first name on the ballot so that is important for Belmopanese to know – they should look for number one. I don’t have a particular strategy to use in a few days that I believe will all of a sudden make me win. My strategy is having been working for many years in Belmopan and having done many projects, programs and started up many new initiatives for my community. I have worked hard for my party and by extension, for my country.”

The convention begins at ten a.m.
