Thieves Took Mahogany Doors Off Hinges at Independence Park

An attempt to create employment in the style of B.T.L. and, less successfully, Memorial Park, in Belmopan threatened to backfire except for Police’s quick intervention. Thieves struck at Independence Park on the central walkway in the capital on Thursday, targeting the solid mahogany doors on several of the booths. But the thieves were run down by police and tonight four suspects are in custody, as Officer Commanding Belmopan Police Senior Superintendent Howell Gillett explains.

“The City Council is doing some renovations to a park, the Independence Park, and I believe the idea is that they will make it more student-friendly – where students could go there and use the Internet free of cost to them on a daily basis. They are setting up some booths that will sell light refreshments among other things. Last night, it was reported to us that four of the doors to four separate booths were stolen. We have four persons in our custody and we also have a vehicle that we believe was used to transport the doors. And there is a strong likelihood that the four persons will be charged for the missing doors.”

The doors are valued at approximately three hundred dollars each.
