The Bizarre ‘Shooting Incident’ at Agriculture Department

An apparent bullet hole was discovered on Thursday in the glass window at an office of the Agriculture Department in Belmopan. It shares space with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Lands Department on Queen Elizabeth II Boulevard in the Cohune Walk area and some believe a message was being sent to the more powerful ministry, which has seen more than its share of controversy recently thanks to ex-Minister Gaspar Vega. But no one was actually hurt and according to police, they are not even sure if shots were fired as no bullet fragments or other traces of gunfire were found. Theories are running fast and rampant, but Senior Superintendent Gillett issued a warning today against idle speculation on either the cause or intent of the incident.

“Yesterday, sometime around ten-thirty, we were alerted by one of the employees of the Agriculture Ministry and we proceeded with our investigators and our crime scene technicians. What we know so far is there is a piercing in the glass that faces Queen Elizabeth Boulevard. We are not certain, so I cannot say with certainty that it was gunshot or anything that caused it. We have done swabbing of the hole and that will be sent to the forensic laboratory for testing. There is a piercing, a very small one; but what amazes us is that it didn’t continue – there were no markings anywhere else in the building. So it could be a number of things but I don’t want to speculate; we are very hopeful that the forensic testing will tell us what actually pierced the door.”

“This hole was recently found, I gather; meaning that it couldn’t have been a building defect or anything like that.”

Sr. Supt. Howell Gillett

“That would lead to speculation but hearing the interviews done, I am convinced that no one is certain when that piercing was caused. It could have been Monday, by some; and it could have even before; but we believe it is sometime, maybe, over the weekend or sometime this week. But we have interviewed the security guards that were there – and I want to tell you that they have security guards twenty-four hours – we interviewed the night security guards and they are saying that no gunshot was heard during their tour of duty; so it makes us want to form an opinion, but as I said earlier, we have to wait on the forensic results.”

One suggestion is that a small caliber weapon may have been used due to the result of the impact on the glass and inside impression. Another is that a rock could have caused the break. Either way, police are investigating.
