Mechanic Shot Dead in Ride-By for Fourth Murder in 8 Days in City

Christian Velasquez

Gun violence is creeping back in the south side of the City where another senseless murder took place less than twenty-hours after the shooting death of Guatemalan national Ruben Esquivel during a home invasion.  At about eleven o’clock on Wednesday night, twenty-three-year-old Christian Velasquez was executed by a gunman who opened fire from a vehicle. The young mechanic was shot on the chest and back while he stood with friends on Antelope Street Extension. Two persons are being questioned and the vehicle has been recovered by the police. But was Velasquez the intended target? News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

In less than twenty-four hours, shots rang out once again on south side Belize City, this time on Antelope Street Extension. Twenty-three-year-old Christian Velasquez was executed in a drive-by shooting around eleven o’clock on Wednesday night as he stood along with several others in front of a house. He perished before reaching the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. His mother Carmita Tasher, who lives in proximity to the area, says she was awoken by the echoes of the gun blasts; minutes she got the terrible news of her son’s demise.  Tasher says she last spoke with Christian on Tuesday when he visited with her.

“I get out yah, I see crowd; now I di wonder how I wah make it dah hospital if dah Christian get shot. Joshua say dah Christian get shot, but me want see fi myself. Anyhow, I get pan Elston Kerr Street and they put me ina wah mobile. I di call ih name; Christian Victor Velasquez, ih twenty-three last year November the sixteen…this year ih wah twenty-four. When I reach the hospital now, I say dah mi son. But the nurse dehn noh wah tell me weh di happen because I dah mental patient and I run with high blood pressure. Anyhow, the doctor mi tell me that mi cholesterol mi deh dah three change. So I di tell the nurse dah mi son, make I see ahn. Eventually I see ahn; they got ahn wrap right up ina wah white cloth and blood to the back of ahn. I hold ih hand and scream ina ih ears. I say “Christian can you hear me?” Then I look ina ih eye.”

Velasquez was a mechanic; he worked along with his father at a garage on Neal Penn Road. By his family’s account, he was not a trouble maker and was simply at the wrong place at the wrong time. And police supported that position, saying that from the investigation, it is believed that Velasquez was not the intended target when a gunman opened fire at the group from the moving vehicle.

“He was seen lying with an apparent gunshot wound to the left side of his chest. Police investigation reveal that sometime around eleven p.m. last night, he was standing in front of 7017 Antelope Street extension when a moving vehicle passed and someone from inside fired shots at his direction which fatally wound him.”

“When I do gone check dah because he deh pan the wrong spot at the wrong time. Dah mi wah drive by; dah never really he dah mi di target. So dah like when I gone check, dehn done ker the man. But they say that ih dead on the spot. I really noh know but hundred percent dah noh somebody weh give trouble like that. ih do ih mechanic, ih do ih construction and all kinda work yo know. dah somebody weh helpful and loving too.”

According to the family, they are puzzled as to why Velasquez was murdered. While a motive has still not been ascertained, police say they have two persons in custody and they have impounded the suspected vehicle used in the committal of the crime.

Supt. Daniel Arzu

“Investigation definitely will suggest the motive when that is made available. But I must say that we do have two persons in questioning at this time in relation to that particular incident.”

Duane Moody

“The vehicle used; has that been ascertained or recovered, anything of that sort because I understand that there were several persons out there at the time of the shooting?”

Christian Velasquez

Supt. Daniel Arzu

“Yes, the vehicle that we were looking for, we have that vehicle in our custody and that vehicle is equally processed by the crime scene technician for any possible clues in relation to the shooting. But so far, we have not gotten anything conclusive, evidential-wise to say that yes we have suspects or etc.”

Two nine millimeter shells were recovered from the scene. Duane Moody for News Five.
