Inspector Fitzroy Abruptly Transferred from Media Relations Unit

Fitzroy Yearwood

Inspector Fitzroy Yearwood…he was one of three liaison officers within the Belize Police Department assigned to facilitate the media with daily situation reports and interviews.  Tonight, he is no longer a member of the Media Relations Unit after being abruptly transferred on Wednesday.  Yearwood’s relocation to a desk job at Precinct Three came just a few hours after he issued a report to the media stating that brothers Wasani and Jafari Castro were being sought for questioning in connection with the aggravated assault of twenty-one-year-old Kevin Brown in San Pedro. That, it turns out, was inaccurate, as public relations personnel from the department now say that the brothers were never named or being sought in respect of that incident and that no report was made to the police.  While we cannot say for sure that Yearwood’s removal from the unit is the result of misspeaking, the timing of his transfer is odd, to say the least, because transfers took effect on July first.  The decision to have him resettled as Relief Commander at the Queen Street Police Station was taken by Commander of Operations Edward Broaster.  ACP Broaster is presently holding over for Eastern Division Commander, ACP Dezeree Phillips, who is out on leave.  Earlier today, Yearwood took to social media in an attempt to shed light on the sudden change of office, attributing it to a months-long request to be transferred from the Media Relations Unit.

“We understand that Press Officer Fitzroy Yearwood has been removed or transferred from the PR Department.  Can you give comment as Deputy Regional Commander for Eastern Division South?  Can you give comment as to what happened?  We know that transfers took effect on July first and so this is kind of unprecedented.”

Supt. Daniel Arzu, Deputy Regional Commander, Eastern Division South

“I have no facts in that regard, so I will not be in a position to comment.  But I must tell you that the job is relatively transferable and you have been hearing that from time to time.  So if he may have been transferred from one post to the other because, you know, the job is transferable and we look at career developments or otherwise.”

There are many versions to the reason behind his removal. One senior officer speaks to his performance, while another colleague says Yearwood had requested a transfer, but was his removal involuntary, coming as it did on Yearwood’s release on the San Pedro aggravated assault of Brown? News Five has just obtained an original copy of the police report from San Pedro on the incident. The report states that Brown was airlifted to Belize City and that “the Castro brothers are wanted for questioning.” All this points back to Yearwood, who clearly did not misspeak when he released the names of the two brothers. But today, the media relations unit denied the report that the brothers were wanted for questioning.
