Charges for Hit & Run Mechanic, But Why Did Police Manhandle Victim?

Lavern Arzu

Three weeks ago Blackman Eddy resident Obed Mojano knocked down and killed Seine Bight resident Dorla Flores. The thirty-nine-year-old cook was struck along with forty-four year old Lavern Arzu and twenty-three year old Henry Augustine when Mojano, a technician, lost control of his grey Chevy Silverado and crashed into the trio. Placencia police confirmed to News Five this evening that Mojano has now been charged with manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct and driving without due care and attention. According to police, further charges are expected in the coming week. But according to Arzu, who visited News Five this afternoon, she was unable to glean that information from police, and one of them mistreated her and her daughter. She tells us how and what she needs.

Lavern Arzu, Traffic Accident Victim

“The W/Policeman told me that I can’t stay there; that I have no right in the police compound. Then the other police officer – the one who took the report along with the Transport Department – he took my phone from my daughter, grabbed it from my daughter’s hands and told her she can’t take pictures in the police station. I told him the battery for this phone was dead – it wasn’t actually dead, dead, dead but it was slow, showing the sign that it was slow. And he was actually searching the phone, searching the phone and deleting what he wanted from the phone – because my nephew had the video of the accident and he blue toothed it for me in the phone; and he just deleted my evidence and he said I had no right; I told him I was one of the persons in the accident; I got hurt and I could have died by now. Right now, I lost my eyeglasses and my eye di give me problem; I lost my gold teeth and not only that, school di open and I am the [only] breadwinner in my house. Right now, I have two [children] to go to sixth form this year but I di use everything on myself. Because not even the medical report they were supposed to take in from the first day – I ended up having to get the medical report before I came to Belize City, Karl Heusner to get my x-rays. Because they could have done that from the first day I got in the accident, the said day.”

Police told us this evening that they are looking into Arzu’s allegations.
