From Gangsters to Businessmen

Dianne Finnegan

Today at the ITVET, as many as twenty-five gang members from across Belize City filed into the classroom where they spent the better part of the day learning how to be young businessmen.  It’s an initiative spearheaded by Diane Finnegan, coordinator of the Youth Apprenticeship Program during the ongoing truce.  She tells News Five more about the two-day program.

“On Monday, we met and we met in a group, the guys from Antelope Street, George Street, PIV, Backalands.  We met to discuss employment opportunities for them, to keep them busy, to be able to put some money in their pockets and during that discussion there is also a training that is going to be taking place tomorrow at the ITVET through the Youth Apprenticeship Program.  So I’ve invited twenty-five of these young men to participate in that entrepreneurship training.  All sorts of initiatives happen within this city, within this country, very few focus on this sector of marginalized youths to equip them with skills and knowledge for them to be able to stand firm and be able to access opportunities when it comes their way because they are trained at a certain level.  This is what we do.  There’s an opportunity to give them some training in the area of entrepreneurship because it’s so hard for them to get an eight to five job.”

On Friday, the participants will be recognized for completion of the training.
