Teaching the Belize Plumbing Code

A train the trainer workshop for plumbing instructors for the ITVETs countrywide and field supervisors for Belize Water Services Limited began earlier this week and will continue through to August fifteenth. The purpose is to provide awareness on the existence of the Belize Plumbing Code. Director of Water from the Public Utilities Commission, Rudolph Williams explains the importance of the workshop.

Rudolph Williams, Director for Water and Waste Water Sector, PUC

“Some of the legal requirements within the plumbing code were not being transferred to students that were being taught.”

Duane Moody

“Talk to us about that. What were some of the substandard practices that were being done?”

Rudolph Williams

Rudolph Williams

“Not to get into the specifics, but I can tell you that the Belize Water Services has been plagued with a lot of high bills which was consequent of a lot of leakages within the residential areas. That was manifested by some of the attendees here has been bad plumbing works; leakages within the walls of brand new building. There has been bad toilets and wash hand basins installations which have led to some leakages. Many people in Belize don’t see bad plumbing works as a threat to human life but if you are aware of the connection between electricity and leaking water all over the place, that can be a threat to your life. And also it is a financial strain on the homeowners. Many homeowners have borrowed significant funds to build their homes and then they have to make major alterations to correct bad plumbing.”

Duane Moody

“So it is also targeting those plumbers that are working privately installing these plumbing inside these homes?”

Rudolph Williams

“Not at the moment no. What we are doing is that we know that most of the plumbers are coming out of the ITVETs and we want to make sure that they are getting the full transfer of knowledge.”
