Trial for Accused Killer in One-Day July Spree

Valentine Baptist

After a year on remand for a broad daylight murder in the city, twenty-eight-year-old Valentine Baptist was committed to stand trial at the Supreme Court for the murder of nineteen-year-old Devin Adolphus Parham.  Baptist, a construction worker and resident of Castle Street, Belize City was arraigned on July eight, 2016, two days after the murder on Cemetery Road.  At a preliminary inquiry today, the evidence against Baptist was not challenged after Prosecutor Corporal Christopher Smith submitted as many as eight statements by police and witnesses.   When asked if he had any alibi witnesses to call, Baptist indicated to the court that he had none. In addition to the murder charge, Baptist is also facing a charge for keeping a firearm without a gun license found on him after the murder.  Parham was the second of three men to be gunned down in the city back in July 2016.  He met his untimely death as he was ambushed on Cemetery Road. About an hour later, Tevin Palmer also known as “Chi-Cha” was murdered in a yard on Castle Street. According to neighbours, Palmer was shot once in the head. Police believe that the murder of Palmer on Castle Street was gang-related and in retaliation for the murder of Giovanni Gentle one week prior to Palmer’s murder.
