Accused David and Anke Doehm released, but back in police custody

There are new developments into the American couple, David and Anke Doehm, who was detained for questioning last week in the wake of the suspicious death of Faye Lin Cannon, their adopted daughter. This morning, the Doehms were whisked by boat to Belize City from San Pedro under police escort. According to the Commissioner of Police, the Doehms were in the process of being released from custody. But we can say tonight from the office of the D.P.P. and the Precinct Three Commander, Superintendent Hilberto Romero that they remain in detention at the Queen Street Police Station.  This afternoon Commissioner of Police Allen Whylie also said that the husband, who was charged on Monday for possession of a small quantity of valium, was initially offered bail and was unable to meet the required sum.  He was in the process of being remanded to the Belize Central Prison when bail was paid on his behalf.  As to his wife, she was released momentarily from police custody on Monday afternoon and was immediately rearrested pending the outcome of an investigation into pornography.  ComPol Whylie says there is insufficient evidence to prove that Anke was in possession of pornographic material.  But as we said, just after six today, the police confirmed that they are at the police station.

“The two individuals were detained pending the investigation.  [That] they were subsequently charged for possession of drugs and were remanded by a Justice of the Peace.  They appeared in court, I believe it was Monday evening.  One of the individuals pled guilty, the other was released by the court.  The individual who pled guilty, I understand that the fine was to be paid forthwith.  He was unable to pay his fine and so a warrant of commitment was issued for that individual.  He, along with his wife, I understand, was transported to Belize City today.  He would have been taken to the prison to serve his time but I understand that his fine has since been paid.  The female was re-detained to look at the issue of pornography.  I think that the investigators have gone through some of their equipment and the photo that they have seen, the legal advice given by our legal advisor, I understand, is that it would not amount to pornography and so I believe that both individuals may have been released from police custody already.  I had a discussion with an individual from the U.S. Embassy and I also directed their consular chief to speak to the Eastern Division regional commander to give a more in depth briefing.  But that is my understanding.  I don’t think anybody’s constitutional right as been breached.”
