No Bail for Orlando Vera Pending Perversion Conviction Appeal

Orlando Vera

Today, another bail application was heard on behalf of convicted prisoner, Orlando Vera, who was convicted and sent to prison on June first, 2017 on a single count of abetment to pervert the course of justice. Vera was jailed for two years after he was recorded telling Belmopan businessman Michael Modiri that he could help him win his gun case by tampering with evidence to cause the prosecution’s case to fail. Vera has now been four times before the Supreme Court to secure bail as he awaits his appeal for his conviction. D.P.P. Cheryl-Lynn Vidal along with counsel for Vera, Anthony Sylvester, made their submissions in court. Vidal submits that in her view the convicted prisoner cannot get bail pending appeal and that it is only in special circumstances that bail should be granted. And in her view, he has shown no special reason to the court. Sylvester is still of the view that on appeal his client will be imposed a non-custodial sentence and he sees no reason why bail should not be granted for the offense of abetment to pervert the course of justice. Judge Lord in making his ruling told both parties that he is mindful that a convicted person is before the court and he is also aware that he is appealing his conviction and that appeal can take up to a year. The judge also said he has to make sure that justice is served in this trial. Judge Lord also noted that it has been one month and three weeks since the trial of Vera concluded and that the notes of appeal are not perfected. With all that said, he denied bail to Vera.
