Will P.M. Step in to Curb Ministers?

Ministers Rene Montero and Manuel Heredia Jr. are headed to the inquiry next Wednesday. But will they follow the example set by their fellows this week, and is it possible that following from the disruption of May seventeenth propagated by Alberto August, the U.D.P. Cabinet has decided to show open contempt of the Senate Committee? Unthinkable as it may seem, P.U.P. leader John Briceño believes so. Whether or not it works, Briceño told us on record that no future government of his will treat the country’s institutions that way.

“Probably that is the intention, to start off with these two, this kind of behavior, and then have the other Ministers stonewall the Senate Select Committee to frustrate the work that they are doing. My concern is that if the Prime Minister does not take swift and decisive action against these Ministers, other Ministers will believe that this is the way to believe and they are going to continue with that same kind of disgraceful and shameful behavior. I want to make it very clear right now that when we form the next Government, and I am the next Prime Minister of this country, I will not allow – and I want to put it on record – I will not allow nor tolerate of my Ministers representing the P.U.P. to behave in such a shameful and disgraceful way; we are going to deal with them swiftly, to ensure that everybody could understand – nobody is above the law. Not the senior Ministers, not the Prime Minister; we are all equal under the Constitution of Belize.”
