Coast Guard’s Lieutenant Soberanis Tops U.S. Course

Greg Soberanis

Lieutenant Greg Soberanis, an upstanding officer of the Belize Coast Guard, recently completed a one-year program at the United States Naval War College.  Soberanis graduated in June, after successfully completing the Naval Staff Course in Newport, Rhode Island.  As the first Belizean to attend the extended version of the program, he was elected class president, after which he won the International Leadership Award for being the most outstanding overseas student.  We asked Lieutenant Soberanis earlier today about the accomplishment.

Lt. Greg Soberanis, Belize National Coast Guard

“First I’d like to thank God for the opportunity that was given to me to attend the United States Naval War College.  I thank Admiral Borland, the Government of Belize and the U.S. government for affording me to go to the War College for one year.  It was an extremely enlightening opportunity for me and it’s definitely a humbling experience to interact with officers from all over the world and to be able to represent not only the Belize Coast Guard but represent the country of Belize.  At the end of the day the skill sets that was acquired from this course, I believe, will be able to assist in executing the mission and vision of the Belize Coast Guard. The courses that are in place for the international students is a one-year course and it is divided into three trimesters and for the first trimester you study national security, you then study strategy and policy and then you get into joint military operations.”
