‘Boots’ Sticks to Guns

Minister Martinez was defensive today telling the media this afternoon that he comported himself fairly well, given the nature of questions that were asked during his testimony.  While his conduct is being described as obnoxious, the Port Loyola Area Representative insists that he was in line with the terms of reference that was before the committee. When asked about his dismissive behavior while being quizzed about his involvement with Alvarine Burgess, the Minister of Human Development said that he had already detailed his connection to the former visa agent in a previous interview with the media.

Anthony ‘Boots’ Martinez, Minister of Human Development

“In my humble opinion, I referred to what was before me in committee.  I referred to what was in the senate report.  I referred to what was the terms of reference of the committee.  I need not to respond to nothing outside of the committee and so, in my humble opinion, I was just being factual.  Everything that related to my involvement, where my name was in the report, I responded adequately.  It might not [have been] what people wanted to hear or what the committee members set out to accomplish in terms of their due diligence.  That was not a matter for me to be dealing with hearsay evidence there when there was no testimony to that effect, of no other person whether former immigration officer, former minister, immigration officer, as to what they thought and believed was my involvement. The terms of reference that, as government you’ve got a responsibility to answer which question, questions that are related to, that the terms of reference, the committee has a terms of reference you know.”

“But regardless of that difficulty, don’t you see it, that it would be better for you to answer those questions so it doesn’t seem that you were trying to evade or hide anything.”

Anthony ‘Boots’ Martinez

“I answered what I was requested to answer.  Giving an opinion, I was not there to give an opinion.  I answered questions in regards to what was relevant in terms of the report.  I gave an interview to Channel Seven and other media houses in regards to my involvement with Ms. Alvarine Burgess.”

“On the topic of Ms. Burgess, you mentioned that she lied on you.  Why were you so cagey or irritated when they were asking you about her?  Didn’t you want to clarify your point?”

Anthony ‘Boots’ Martinez

“I think was cagey and irritated across.  In my view, I gave a complete interview to Channel Seven and other news media about what I, my involvement, but I was just clear with Ms. Alvarine Burgess.  I was just clear to the committee that I am there to deal with what is entailed in the report.”
